I have to start by saying this book could be described as creepy, even disturbing. However, as this is literature, every reader will take away something different. What I did find interesting is that the author is an editor at Scientific American, and the book does a great job of using real science and robotics.
The main character is Adam, who has muscular dystrophy, and has only months to live. Wheelchair-bound, he loves computer games and virtual reality.
Adam's father is a computer scientist, and the Sigma program that he is working on literally takes over the military and governments. Adam's father develops the Pioneer Project that will take six terminally ill children and recruit them to literally save the world. But, there's a catch.
These children agree to "download" their memories from their brains into U.S. military robots to fight Sigma. However, the procedure will kill them, and they will "live" on in robots. In short, they are preserved through their memories in the robot "body", but the question is, are they really alive? What is it to be human?
The book will attract a lot of readers who love AI, robotics, computers and science. As the six kids become US military robot fighters, the book does offer a lot of adventure and keeps the pace of the plot going.
There is a sequel in the works!
