Alan Gratz
I could not put this book down. Alan Gratz is known for writing historical fiction, and this book is an excellent example of the genre. The story is told from the perspective of three characters living in three different eras. Josef lives in Germany during the Holocaust, Isabel is fleeing Cuba during the Revolution, and Mahmoud is living during in the current day, fleeing the slaughter of war in Syria.
The stories highlight the persecution, humanity, and desperation of these people, and explains that these people, who loved their home country, had no choice to leave if they wanted to live. Anyone who is interested not only in history, but with current world events, will be fascinated by this book.
Reviewers have called this book a "tour de force," and I agree. As a side note, Mr. Gratz is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book to UNICEF, a relief organization for refugees.
