Seventh grader Chloe Cho is an entertaining main character with a lot of sass and determination. Chloe is the only Asian American student in her whole school and she's tired of people thinking she's on the honor roll and first chair violinist just because she's Asian (and to be more precise...Korean).
Just like any middle schooler, she is trying to figure out who she is, but she isn't getting any help from her parents. They both simply refuse to discuss their home country, Korea, and their past. Chloe finally gets someone to talk to about her ancestry when she gets Ms. Lee, another Korean-American, her new social studies teacher.
It's around the middle of the book when Chloe learns who she really is and where she comes from that changes the whole story and throws the whole genre on its head. Even though it was a bit predictable, I like a book that's not afraid to be different and take a story somewhere unexpected. Please note that I can't give anything away or else it will take away the fun.
When Chloe learns her real origins things get real and Chloe stops doing her school assignments, loses her spot as first chair, and fights with her parents. For anyone who is searching for who they are and who feel lost with others they can't identify with, this could be a great fit!
