Raina Telgemeier
Let me preface this by saying that I don't read many graphic novels. However, I did read the graphic novel Drama by Raina Telgemeier and loved the story so I decided to also give Ghosts a try. Like many of Telgemeier's other graphic novels, this story tells the story of sisters and family.
The art on the pages is absolutely stunning and blends the colors and power of Dia de los Muertos, the tradition of the Day of the Dead. The main character's family is Mexican-American, and has a refreshing and different perspective than many YA books.
But the most heart-wrenching story is the story of the two sisters, Catrina and Maya. The love is palpable, and typical sibling rivalry is well illustrated on the pages. What makes the sisters relationship so different is that Maya, Catrina's little sister, has cystic fibrosis, a progressive, genetic disease that causes lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. Because of this, it brings the reality of human mortality to the front of the plot, and blends the story of the Day of the Dead in beautifully. You have to read this story; it will remain in your heart forever.
