Rebecca Stead
Liar & Spy is written by Newbery-award winning author Rebecca Stead, author of When You Reach Me and First Light. Seventh-grader Georges is dealing with typical middle school issues: getting teased by other boys, trying to figure out why his friends have changed or "moved on," and moving out of his family house to an apartment in Brooklyn.
The book is a quick, easy-to-read mystery. When Georges meets Safer, another boy in his building, his whole life changes. Safer invites Georges to spy with him on the mysterious "Mr. X," a man in the building who Safer believes is up to no-good in his apartment.
The story moves between this mystery and family issues that Georges is facing as his dad quits his job, and mom takes on more work to support the family. (I can't mention more or I'll give the ending away!)
Chapters are short and concise and keep the action moving. A book that many middle-schoolers can connect to and enjoy. This book is also a Nutmeg nominee for 2015!
